29-Year-Old Teacher Dies by Suicide in Vasundhara, Husband and Father-in-Law Arrested
Vasundhara: A heartbreaking incident took place on Sunday when 29-year-old Anvita Sharma, a teacher at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi, was found dead at her home. Before her death, she sent a final WhatsApp message to her family, revealing the emotional pain she had been suffering due to constant criticism from her husband and mistreatment from her in-laws.
In her message, Anvita shared that her husband always found fault in everything she did. She also accused her in-laws of being selfish, saying they only “knew how to take.”
Following her tragic death, the police arrested her husband, Gaurav Kaushik, and his father, Surendra Sharma. However, her mother-in-law, Manju, is currently missing. Anvita’s last message to her husband reflected her deep sorrow, as she wrote: “I have prepared food, Gaurav Kaushik, please eat it.”
Family Accuses Husband and In-Laws of Harassment
Gaurav Kaushik, a lawyer in Delhi, and his father were arrested after Anvita’s family filed a complaint accusing them of dowry harassment. The police have charged them under multiple sections of the law, including those related to cruelty, dowry death, and intentional harm. According to ACP Abhishek Srivastava, the incident happened around 1:30 PM on Sunday, while Gaurav and their son were not at home.
When Anvita’s family received her message, they immediately tried to call her, but she did not respond. Worried, they informed Gaurav, who rushed home but found the door locked from the inside. They had to cut open the window grille to enter the house.
A Troubled Marriage
Anvita and Gaurav were married on December 12, 2019, and had a four-year-old son together. She had been working as a PGT Fine Arts teacher since October 2019. In her final messages, she wrote that her husband had married her job, not her, expecting a beautiful, hardworking wife with a career. However, despite all her efforts, nothing was ever good enough for him.
She revealed that her husband and in-laws expected her to focus only on them, but she also wanted to support her parents and brother. She mentioned that her husband taunted her more than any mother-in-law ever could, criticizing everything she did. She wrote that she felt like nothing more than a “working maid” for them and was exhausted from pretending to be happy.
Final Message to Her Parents
In her last message to her parents, Anvita expressed her deep love for her son and her fears for his future. She wrote: “My husband has access to my bank accounts, chequebook, and everything. Please take care of my child. I love him the most in this world, and I want him to be with you.” She also stated that she did not want her son to grow up like his father.
Her father, Anil Sharma, filed a complaint with the police, leading to an FIR. He said that he had spent ₹26 lakh on Anvita’s wedding and had given her in-laws gold, silver jewelry, and household items.
Allegations of Dowry Harassment
Sharma further claimed that Gaurav’s family had demanded a four-wheeler during the wedding, so he bought them a blue Dzire car. However, soon after the marriage, Anvita’s husband, father-in-law, and mother-in-law allegedly started abusing her both physically and mentally, demanding more dowry.
According to Sharma, Anvita’s in-laws took control of her salary, chequebook, and ATM cards. When she asked for them back, she was verbally and physically abused. The abuse worsened on March 16, leading her to write a suicide note and end her life in distress.
This tragic incident has once again highlighted the ongoing issue of dowry harassment and domestic abuse in society. The police investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being made to locate Anvita’s missing mother-in-law.
