Ahead of the Lok Sabha election announcement on Friday, the civic body approved a number of projects.

The standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) approved proposals totalling Rs 250 crore.

According to civic officials, the high number of projects approved is a result of things like the election code of conduct being implemented once polls are announced and the financial year ending on March 31.

Pre-monsoon works are among the many significant projects that need to begin as soon as possible, according to a senior PMC official. Following the implementation of the election code of conduct, the administration will not be permitted to approve any new projects. As a result, approvals are granted at the last minute.

PMC officials stated that the committee was presented with proposals related to tarring, flyover construction, grade separator construction, hyacinth removal, and road repairs. Aside from these, the meeting also approved work on a sports complex and swimming tanks.

Works such as building culverts and laying pipelines were approved.

Additionally, the committee approved pre-monsoon works, including nullah cleaning, at a significantly reduced cost—nearly 50% less than the bidding price.

Civic activists have called for an investigation into the hastily approved projects and raised concerns about them. They said that the administration was not doing what was required of them.

How will the quality of work be upheld if the proposals were accepted at reduced prices, according to a person from a Pune Citizens’ Group. Since these approvals are granted with bad intentions, the officials responsible should be held accountable.
