In a heartwarming incident, four patients got a lease of life through the organ donation of a 12-year-old girl, who was declared brain dead.
The crucial decision of the girl’s parents to donate kidneys, liver and heart turned out to be life-saving for four people.
Vaidehi Bhau Tanawade, a resident of Santacruz, was diagnosed with a chronic case of Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) in 2020. This is a rare autoimmune disorder in which a person’s blood doesn’t clot properly.
She was placed on immunosuppressants and modulators as a part of the treatment.
Later, she received intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), a therapy meant to help weakened immune systems fight off infection in 2022.
In June 2023 and July 2024, she received transfusions of red blood cells (PRBCs) but her health continued to deteriorate. In the early hours of July 13, Vaidehi suffered from sudden weakness, encephalopathy, and internal bleeding which led to vomiting blood. She was immediately admitted to Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital.
A CT scan showed severe intracranial hemorrhage with herniation and she was declared brain dead.
Vaidehi’s parents decided to donate her organs for the health of needy patients after they were counselled regarding organ donation and keeping humanity alive.
One kidney was donated to a patient in the same hospital while the other went to KEM Hospital in Parel. Meanwhile, her liver was given to a patient at Gleneagles Hospital in Parel and her heart was taken to MGM Hospital in Chennai.
