Pune city is witnessing a troubling decline in the birth rate of girls, with only 898 girls born for every 1,000 boys last year, according to the Public Health Department. This alarming statistic highlights a persistent gender imbalance, with urban areas reporting a ratio of 897 girls to 1,000 boys, and rural areas recording 901 girls per 1,000 boys in 2023.

The issue is further exacerbated by illegal practices such as gender-based abortions and female genital mutilation, as seen in a recent case in Baramati’s Malegaon, where a van was found conducting such procedures. Despite state efforts, including a monthly subsidy for women, experts say more needs to be done to address deep-rooted societal preferences for male children.

Dr. Radhakishan Pawar, Deputy Director of Health for Pune Circle, stressed the importance of vigilance and citizen involvement in reporting illegal fetal diagnosis, noting, “We are taking strict action and working to raise awareness.” The state health department has ramped up inspections and launched awareness campaigns.

With Maharashtra’s average sex ratio standing at 907 girls per 1,000 boys, the declining birth rate of girls in Pune underscores the urgent need for stronger measures to combat gender inequality and protect the rights of female children.
