Sanjay Malhotra Appointed as New RBI Governor for a Three-Year Term
On December 9, the government announced that Sanjay Malhotra has been appointed as the new governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Malhotra graduated in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in 1989 and later earned a Master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University, USA. He then cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination and became an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer in the Rajasthan cadre. Over his 33-year career, he has worked in areas like power, finance, taxation, information technology, and mining. He will serve as the RBI governor for three years starting December 11.

IIT Kanpur is one of India’s Institutes of National Importance. In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, it ranked 4th in the engineering category, 5th overall, 7th in research, and 30th in management. Globally, the QS World University Rankings 2024 placed it at 263rd.
Princeton University, founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, is the fourth-oldest college in what was then British North America. In global rankings, it is ranked 22nd by QS and 4th by Times Higher Education.
