Union Cabinet Approves ‘One Nation, One Election’ Plan

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, which aims to align Lok Sabha and state assembly elections. This decision could lead to a major change in India’s electoral system. A detailed bill on the plan is expected to be introduced in Parliament during the ongoing Winter Session or the Budget Session next year.

The initiative took a step forward when the Central Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, formed a High-Level Committee on September 2, 2023. Chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, the committee explored the feasibility of holding simultaneous elections. After consulting political parties and stakeholders, it submitted its report on March 14, 2024.

Challenges in Passing the Bill

To pass the bill, the BJP-led NDA government needs a two-thirds majority in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. However, this majority is based on the number of members present during the vote. For example, in the Lok Sabha, if 400 out of 543 members are present, the required majority drops to 268 votes.

In the Rajya Sabha, the calculation works the same way. If opposition members walk out during discussions or voting, the reduced participation could make it easier for the government to secure the required votes.

Opposition and Uncertainty

The proposal has faced strong criticism from Congress and other INDIA bloc parties, which are expected to oppose the bill.

If passed, the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative would reduce the frequency of elections across the country, saving time and resources. However, with significant opposition to the plan, its future remains uncertain.
