The Maharashtra government is considering a new plan to tackle traffic congestion and air pollution. Under this proposal, people buying cars may need to show proof that they have a parking space before registering their vehicles.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has approved a 100-day plan to address traffic and pollution problems in areas like the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Nagpur, and Pune. Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar introduced the plan, which aims to control the rising number of private vehicles.

If implemented, car buyers in cities like Mumbai will need to provide additional documents proving they have parking space. This idea is inspired by cities like London, Tokyo, New York, Zurich, and Singapore, where similar rules have successfully reduced traffic and pollution.

The plan is still in the early stages and would be introduced gradually. At the same time, the government plans to improve public transport options to offer people an alternative to private vehicles.

The government will work with housing societies, local authorities, and transport experts to identify parking solutions and enforce the new rule. The goal is to strike a balance between vehicle ownership and reducing congestion and pollution in the state.
