RBI Introduces New Phone Number Series to Combat Spam and Fraudulent Calls in Banking
To fight spam and fraudulent calls, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced two new phone number series for banks and financial institutions. This move will help customers easily identify real communication from their banks and avoid scams.
Key Changes:
- Promotional Calls and SMS: Numbers starting with 140 will be used for marketing calls and promotional messages, like offers on loans, credit cards, and insurance.
- Transaction-Related Calls: Banks will now use phone numbers starting with 1600 for all calls or messages related to financial transactions. Any legitimate call or SMS about your transactions will come from this number.
This initiative is part of the RBI’s plan to reduce spam and fraud. Scammers often pretend to be bank officials to trick people, causing financial losses. By using these specific number series, the RBI hopes to make it easier for customers to recognize real communication and avoid falling for scams. Customers are advised to be cautious and only respond to calls or messages from these official numbers.
