Google’s Gemini AI Now Remembers Past Conversations

Google has introduced a new memory feature for its Gemini Advanced AI chatbot, allowing it to remember and reference past chats. This update makes interactions with the AI smoother and more relevant, but some users may have privacy concerns. To address this, Google is offering an option to turn off the memory feature if users prefer.

How the New Memory Feature Works

Previously, Gemini could only remember user preferences when asked. Now, it can review entire conversations, making it easier for users to continue discussions without repeating themselves.

For example, if you talked about the solar system in a past chat, you can now ask Gemini to summarize that conversation, and it will retrieve the details for you. This saves time and makes interactions more natural.

Before this update, users had to start fresh with each chat, as Gemini couldn’t recall previous discussions. Now, it can build on past conversations, making it a more helpful and personalized AI assistant.

Privacy and Control for Users

Google allows users to manage their chat history in several ways:

  • Review stored conversations
  • Delete specific chats
  • Set a time limit for how long conversations are saved
  • Turn off the memory feature completely by disabling Gemini Apps Activity in settings

Gemini will also notify users whenever it uses past conversations to generate responses, ensuring transparency.

How Gemini Compares to Other AI Chatbots

This update gives Gemini an edge over OpenAI’s ChatGPT. While ChatGPT can remember general information, it cannot directly recall or summarize specific past chats like Gemini can. This makes Gemini more personalized and user-friendly.

Availability

The new memory feature is currently available in English for users with the Google One AI Premium Plan on the Gemini web and mobile apps. Google also plans to expand this feature to other languages and business customers in the coming weeks.
