As The Time for Inauguration of Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains Nears, Let’s Take A Look at the Features Offered
Particular focus has been placed on enhancing passenger comfort within the sleeper train.

Indian Railways will soon introduce a new version of the Vande Bharat trains, which will be known as Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains. The announcement was made by the then railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on 9th March. He had addressed the audience after revealing the prototype train car body structure for the Vande Bharat sleeper produced by BEML in Bengaluru.
He highlighted the achievements of previous projects like the Vande Bharat chair car, Namo-Bharat (rapid rail transit system) and Amrit Bharat train (trains using push-pull technology). He emphasised that the next significant milestones include the introduction of Vande Bharat sleeper trains and Vande Metro.
Bharat Earth Movers Limited comes under the Ministry of Defence. It manufactures products for a range of sectors including defence, aerospace, mining, construction, rail and metro. The company has secured orders to produce 10 train sets consisting of 160 coaches for the Vande Bharat Sleeper project.
Let’s look at some of the features this train will offer:
· Introducing a semi-high-speed train equipped with modern coaches has the potential to notably decrease travel durations for long-distance journeys.
· The Vande Bharat Sleeper will feature distinct exterior body design, sleeping berths and onboard amenities tailored to accommodate long-distance travel requirements.
· The sleeper cars will comprise AC first class, AC two-tier and AC three-tier sub-classes.
· It will include sleeper compartments accessible for wheelchairs, comfortable bunk beds and bathrooms equipped with anti-spill washbasins.
· The prototype of the Vande Bharat Sleeper is projected to be unveiled in the first or second quarter of 2024, with operations slated to commence in early 2025.
Mr. Vaishnaw emphasised that particular focus has been placed on enhancing passenger comfort within the sleeper train. Improvements include enhancements to the foot area of the ladder for easier entry, redesigned toilets, improved air-conditioning control, upgraded seat cushioning using new technology and measures to maintain oxygen levels while eliminating 99.99% of viruses.

He highlighted that BEML’s production is running at maximum capacity, with the entire manufacturing and assembly process being carried out in-house, showcasing the company’s dedication to quality and precision through its specialised team of engineers and staff.
