Bengaluru to Get 40-km Tunnel Road to Ease Traffic
Bengaluru is planning a 40-km underground tunnel road to tackle the city’s heavy traffic jams. The BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) has finalized the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project.
Key Details of the Tunnel
The tunnel will have two main routes:
- North-South Corridor (18 km): From Hebbal flyover in the north to Silk Board junction in the south.
- East-West Corridor (22 km): From KR Puram in the east to Mysore Road in the west.
A study found that building a single-tube tunnel would cost less than a twin-tube tunnel.
Funding and Investment
The BBMP plans to take a loan of ₹19,000 crore from the open market, with the state government acting as a guarantor. Private investors will also help fund part of the construction.
If successful, some of the loan money will be used for another underground road linking KR Puram to Nayandahalli.
Phases and Costs
The project will be completed in two phases:
- Phase 1: The 18-km north-south corridor (Hebbal to Silk Board) will cost ₹16,500 crore, excluding land acquisition costs. BBMP will invest ₹6,500 crore, and private investors will cover the rest.
- Phase 2: A 28-km underground road from KR Puram to Nayandahalli, estimated to cost ₹25,000 crore. Work on this phase hasn’t started yet.
