Bengaluru Woman Jumps from Moving Auto to Escape Drunk Driver; Namma Yatri and Police Respond
A woman in Bengaluru jumped from a moving auto-rickshaw on Thursday night to escape a drunk driver, according to her husband. She had booked the ride through the ‘Namma Yatri’ app for a trip from Horamavu to Thanisandra.
In a post on X, her husband detailed the incident, stating, “Namma Yatri Auto Issue! My wife booked an auto from Horamavu to Thanisandra, Bangalore. However, the driver was drunk and drove her towards the wrong location near Hebbal. Despite repeatedly asking him to stop, he refused, leaving her no choice but to jump out of the moving auto. The biggest flaw in ‘Namma Yatri’ is the lack of immediate customer support—it asks us to ‘wait for 24 hours.’ How can one wait 24 hours in an emergency? What about women’s safety?”
The post gained significant attention online, prompting a response from Namma Yatri. “Hi Azhar, we’re deeply sorry to hear about this incident and hope your wife is doing well. Please share the ride details via DM, and we’ll investigate this matter urgently,” the company stated.
Namma Yatri is a locally developed ride-hailing platform designed to address India’s transportation needs. The service aims to provide a cost-effective and transparent alternative to traditional ride-hailing apps, focusing on empowering both commuters and drivers. Unlike other platforms, Namma Yatri facilitates direct connections between passengers and auto-rickshaw drivers, eliminating intermediaries.
The woman’s husband has urged the police to take the matter seriously and act against the driver. Bengaluru police responded swiftly and have launched an investigation into the incident.
