BH Series Number Plate: Simplifying Interstate Travel for Frequent Movers

The BH (Bharat) series number plate was introduced in 2021 to make it easier for people who move often to use their vehicles in different states. Unlike regular number plates that start with state codes like UP (Uttar Pradesh), DL (Delhi), or MH (Maharashtra), BH series plates begin with the year of registration followed by “BH”. These plates allow vehicle owners to drive anywhere in India without needing to re-register in a new state.

Who Can Get a BH Series Number Plate?

This special number plate is only for private vehicles and is available to:

  • Central and state government employees
  • Defense personnel
  • Bank employees
  • Private sector employees whose companies have offices in at least four states or Union Territories

Benefits of a BH Series Number Plate

Normally, if you move to another state, you must re-register your vehicle within 12 months. The BH series plate removes this rule, allowing free movement across India. Another advantage is that road tax can be paid in smaller installments, reducing the financial burden.

How to Apply for a BH Series Number Plate

There are two ways to apply:

  1. Online through the MoRTH Vahan portal
  2. Through a car dealership (recommended for an easier process)

Application Process:

  • The dealership submits Form 20 on behalf of the applicant.
  • Private sector employees must provide Form 60 (Working Certificate) and an official employee ID.
  • The applicant must select the “BH” series option while applying.
  • Fees and motor vehicle tax are paid online.
  • The RTO reviews and approves the BH series registration.

Once approved, the owner gets a BH series number plate, making interstate travel hassle-free without additional paperwork.
