Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation today updated in a post on X that the second phase of Dharmaveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road will be opened after the inspection by CM Eknath Shinde and various dignitaries. BMC on their X handle shared the panoramic view of the tunnel.

Mumbai commuters will soon find relief with the upcoming opening of the second phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road on 11th June. The tunnel will be accessible from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on weekdays, Monday through Friday, while remaining closed on weekends to facilitate ongoing work.

The recently built road is designed to drastically decrease travel duration between south Mumbai and the western suburbs by 70%, along with a 34% reduction in fuel consumption.

The recently completed coastal route will enable travel from Marine Drive heading north to Bhulabhai Desai Marg, Barrister Rajani Patel Chowk (Lotus Jetty) and Vatsalabai Desai Chowk (Haji Ali Chowk). The BMC plans to extend the phase up to Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk by 10th July, enhancing northward travel through the Mumbai Coastal Road Project. Additionally, the connectivity along the coastal route will be improved.

The project encompasses a 10.58-kilometer roadway linking Mumbai and Worli. This eight-lane road includes a tunnel beneath it, featuring six lanes. Clear lane markings will designate specific lanes for buses both on the road and within the tunnel.

Digging for the tunnel heading south commenced in January 2021 and wrapped up by January 2022. Notably, the tunnels are fortified with a 375-millimetre-thick layer of concrete, integrating fire protection boards to enhance safety measures.
