Even I Got Fined Twice: Nitin Gadkari Emphasizes Tech-Driven Road Discipline
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, revealed during the News18 Rising Bharat Summit that he, too, has faced the consequences of traffic violations—proving that no one is above the law when it comes to road safety enforcement.
“With the widespread use of cameras and automated scanners, it’s impossible to escape penalties,” Gadkari remarked. “Believe it or not, I’ve received two challans of ₹500 each while driving in Mumbai.” He noted that the fines were issued while he was using his vehicle during the Worli-Bandra Sea Link project.
Gadkari clarified that traffic penalties are not intended as a revenue source for the government. “These fines are meant to enforce discipline. If citizens follow the rules, they won’t have to pay a single rupee,” he explained, stressing the importance of voluntary compliance for safer roads.
The minister pointed to the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act of 2019, which sharply increased fines to improve road safety. However, he acknowledged that the expected outcomes haven’t fully materialized. In fact, the number of road deaths rose from 1.59 lakh in 2019 to 1.68 lakh in 2022—a 6% spike.
Highlighting the government’s efforts to improve enforcement, Gadkari said that authorities are increasingly relying on AI-powered systems and modern surveillance technology to monitor traffic behavior and enhance safety.
He concluded by emphasizing that road safety is a collective responsibility, and consistent rule-following by all road users is essential to reduce accidents and save lives.
