Routine Lift Ride Turns Dangerous After Hydrogen Balloons Catch Fire in Goregaon Building

Mumbai: What should have been an ordinary elevator ride turned into a terrifying experience for three people at a residential building in Goregaon West after hydrogen-filled balloons caught fire inside a lift.

The incident occurred at Anmol Towers, located opposite a petrol pump. According to CCTV footage from inside the elevator, a woman entered the lift carrying a trolley. Shortly after, a man stepped in with a large plastic bag full of balloons, followed by another young man with a backpack. Moments after the lift doors closed, the balloons suddenly burst and caught fire.

Within seconds, flames and smoke filled the small elevator cabin, shocking the occupants. The fire is believed to have been caused by a spark or static electricity, as the balloons were filled with hydrogen gas, which is highly flammable—especially in enclosed spaces like elevators.

Reacting quickly, the three managed to escape as soon as the lift doors opened. Two people suffered minor burn injuries, while the woman escaped without serious harm. Thankfully, no casualties were reported.

Officials later confirmed that the balloons were filled with hydrogen, commonly used for decorative purposes and street sales. Authorities have repeatedly warned against carrying gas-filled balloons in confined areas due to the risk of fire and explosion.

The CCTV video of the incident has gone viral, raising serious concerns about safety in residential buildings. Residents and housing societies have been urged to remain vigilant and strictly ban the movement of hazardous and flammable materials, including hydrogen-filled balloons, inside lifts and apartment complexes.
