Delhi Imposes Fines Amid Nationwide Non-Compliance; Maharashtra Sets March 2025 Deadline

Despite the mandatory requirement for High-Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) on all vehicles in India, enforcement varies across states. In Maharashtra, over seven lakh newly registered vehicles, including government vehicles, still lack these tamper-proof plates. The state has set a deadline of March 31, 2025, for all vehicles to comply, with fines to follow for non-compliance.

In contrast, Delhi’s Transport Department has launched a strict enforcement drive, penalizing vehicle owners without HSRPs and dealers failing to install them. Offenders face fines of ₹5,000, and dealers supplying non-compliant vehicles are also being penalized. Additionally, Delhi Traffic Police are targeting vehicles with unauthorized number plates featuring fancy fonts, religious symbols, or incorrect colors, imposing fines of ₹500 for first-time offenders.

The lack of uniform enforcement and stringent penalties nationwide hinders full compliance. Authorities must strengthen enforcement, introduce stricter penalties, and raise public awareness to ensure all vehicles are equipped with HSRPs, enhancing security and aiding in crime prevention.
