New Delhi, April 24: In the aftermath of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 28 lives, mostly tourists, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday announced a series of sweeping measures targeting Pakistan.

The high-level meeting reviewed the national security situation and resolved to increase pressure on Pakistan through diplomatic and strategic means. Key among the steps taken is the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, which will remain in abeyance until Pakistan provides credible and irreversible proof of ceasing support for cross-border terrorism.

Additionally, the Attari Integrated Checkpost has been ordered shut with immediate effect. However, individuals who have crossed over with valid endorsements will be allowed to return to Pakistan through the same route until May 1, 2025.

In a further diplomatic escalation, India has withdrawn SAARC visa exemption privileges for Pakistani nationals. All SPES visas issued earlier stand cancelled, and Pakistani citizens in India on these visas have been directed to exit the country within 48 hours.

As part of diplomatic downgrading, India has declared the Defence, Military, Naval, and Air Advisors at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi as persona non grata. They are required to leave the country within a week. In parallel, India will withdraw its own corresponding advisors from the High Commission in Islamabad.

Speaking to the media, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misry said,

“The CCS has reviewed the overall security landscape and directed security forces to maintain a high level of vigilance. India will ensure the perpetrators of this attack are brought to justice, and those who sponsor terrorism are held accountable.”

Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh condemned the Pahalgam attack and assured a strong response.

“We will hunt down those who carried out this heinous act and those who orchestrated it from behind the scenes,” he stated.

These announcements reflect a hardening of India’s stance and an intensified focus on national security following one of the deadliest terror incidents in recent times.
