IPL 2025: Exciting Rule Changes for the 18th Season

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) prepares for its 18th edition, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced new rules to bring fresh changes to the game.

With 10 teams competing for the IPL trophy, these updates aim to fine-tune various aspects of play. While some changes are officially confirmed, rumors continue about possible player replacements during the season.

Before the season-opener between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Kolkata, here are the biggest rule changes for this season:

1. DRS for Wide Balls

For the first time, the Decision Review System (DRS) can be used to review wide deliveries, including height and off-side wides.

However, leg-side wides will still be judged by the on-field umpire. This change is expected to make wide ball decisions more accurate and fair.

2. Impact Player Rule Stays

The Impact Player rule, which allows teams to field 12 players instead of 11, will continue this season.

Despite criticism that it affects all-rounder development, the BCCI has decided to retain it for IPL 2025.

3. Second New Ball in Second Innings (Conditional)

To tackle the dew factor in evening matches, IPL will introduce a second new ball in the second innings, starting from the 11th over.

However, this will only be implemented if the on-field umpires decide that dew is significantly affecting the game. Afternoon matches will continue with traditional ball usage.

4. Saliva Ban Lifted

After being banned since the COVID-19 pandemic, bowlers will now be allowed to use saliva to shine the ball.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) had permanently banned saliva use in 2022, but since the IPL follows its own rules, this decision could have a global impact on cricket.

With these new rules, IPL 2025 promises thrilling gameplay and fresh challenges as teams get ready for an action-packed season!
