Karnataka Sets ₹200 Movie Ticket Cap, Plans Big Support for Kannada Films

Karnataka Sets ₹200 Movie Ticket Cap, Plans Big Support for Kannada Films
The Karnataka government has set a maximum price of ₹200 for movie tickets in all theaters, including multiplexes. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced this during the state budget to make movies more affordable and help the Kannada film industry grow.
To further support Kannada films, the government is launching its own OTT platform. This comes after filmmakers like Rakshit Shetty and Rishab Shetty raised concerns that big OTT platforms are not giving enough attention to Kannada content. In 2024, Rakshit Shetty’s Paramvah Studio even created its own streaming service to release the web series Ekam after failing to get a deal with major OTT platforms.
Other Plans to Boost Kannada Cinema
- ₹3 crore will be used to create an archive of Kannada films, both digital and non-digital, to preserve Karnataka’s film history.
- The Kannada film industry is now recognized as an official industry, making it eligible for government benefits under the state’s Industrial Policy.
- A new multiplex complex will be built in Bengaluru’s Nandini Layout through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) on a 2.5-acre plot owned by the Karnataka Film Academy.
- The government has allocated 150 acres in Mysuru for a Film City with world-class facilities. This ₹500 crore project aims to attract filmmakers from India and abroad.
These steps will make movies more affordable and give Kannada cinema the support it needs to grow.
