Madras High Court Imposes Vehicle Limits for Ooty and Kodaikanal to Protect Environment

To protect the environment and promote sustainable tourism, the Madras High Court has set new vehicle limits for Ooty and Kodaikanal, two famous hill stations in South India. These restrictions will be in place from April 1 to June to control tourist traffic and reduce harm to nature.

Vehicle Limits for Tourists

The court has decided that a maximum of 6,000 vehicles can enter Ooty on weekdays and 8,000 on weekends. For Kodaikanal, the limit is 4,000 on weekdays and 6,000 on weekends. These rules aim to prevent traffic jams and protect the environment. Local vehicles and those carrying agricultural goods are not affected by these restrictions.

E-Pass Requirement and Preference for Electric Vehicles

Starting April 29, 2024, all vehicles must get an e-pass to enter Ooty and Kodaikanal. The court has asked authorities to give priority to electric vehicles when issuing these passes. This system helps officials track the number and type of vehicles visiting during the summer season.

The court acted after reviewing a government report that showed around 20,000 vehicles enter the Nilgiris daily, which could harm the fragile mountain roads. To study this issue, IIM-Bangalore and IIT-Madras will conduct research to determine the safe vehicle limit for the ghat roads.

Traffic and Accommodation Challenges

During peak season, daily vehicle entry into the Nilgiris includes:

  • 11,509 cars
  • 1,341 vans
  • 637 buses
  • 6,524 two-wheelers

The region has accommodation for about 20,000 tourists, including guest houses run by different government departments.

Travel Tips for Visitors

  1. E-passes are mandatory – Book your pass in advance, as they may be limited.
  2. Electric vehicles have an advantage – You’ll have a better chance of getting an e-pass.
  3. Public transport is easier – If you arrive by train or government bus, you don’t need an e-pass.
  4. Avoid peak days – Traveling on weekdays increases your chances of getting an e-pass.
  5. Be ready for delays – Checkpoints may take time for e-pass verification.

These measures will help control tourist numbers and ensure that Ooty and Kodaikanal remain clean and safe for future visitors.
