Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the state’s Cyber Police to take immediate action against controversial content about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on Wikipedia. This decision follows strong protests from Shivaji Maharaj’s followers and history enthusiasts, who believe the information is misleading and disrespectful.

Connection to Upcoming Film Chhava

The controversy comes as excitement builds for the Bollywood film Chhava, starring Vicky Kaushal and directed by Laxman Utekar. The movie highlights the bravery and sacrifices of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and has been well received by audiences. With Shivaji Maharaj’s birth anniversary on February 19, discussions about his legacy are gaining momentum.

CM Fadnavis Takes Action

Chief Minister Fadnavis responded to the issue, stating, “There is inappropriate content about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on the English Wikipedia. I have asked the Cyber Police to take necessary action and contact Wikipedia to address the matter. We will not tolerate any disrespect toward Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.”

He acknowledged that Wikipedia has its own editorial policies but mentioned that the government would explore ways to prevent the distortion of historical facts. He also emphasized the importance of responsible use of free speech, especially in the age of social media.

Debate on Social Media

The controversy intensified when film critic Kamran Akmal Khan shared a screenshot of the disputed Wikipedia content on X (formerly Twitter), claiming it to be factually correct. His post has sparked further debate, with the content now widely circulating online.

As tensions rise, many are now waiting to see how the Cyber Police and Wikipedia respond to the demands for content correction.
