Maharashtra Launches Cashless Treatment Scheme for Road Accident Victims
Mumbai, April 19: In a major step to improve emergency healthcare, the Maharashtra government has introduced a new scheme offering cashless treatment up to ₹1 lakh for individuals injured in road accidents. The aim is to ensure quick, accessible, and cost-free medical care during emergencies while easing the financial burden on affected families.
Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar made the announcement during a review meeting, stressing the need for immediate treatment in accident cases. He instructed officials to make sure all eligible victims receive cashless care without delay. “Every accident victim must get treatment worth up to ₹1 lakh without any charges,” Abitkar said, warning of strict action against any violations.
The scheme applies to both registered hospitals and emergency medical centres, making access to treatment faster and easier. The government also plans to increase the number of participating hospitals from 1,792 to 4,180 across the state to widen the network.
To monitor the scheme’s implementation, district-level committees led by collectors will oversee its execution and ensure transparency. A special study committee has also been formed to review the scheme and suggest improvements, such as updating treatment costs, adding new procedures, and even considering costly treatments like organ transplants. The committee is expected to submit its recommendations within a month.
For better access and public awareness, the government will soon launch a mobile app offering real-time updates on hospital availability, bed status, and a complaint redressal system.
Hospitals under the scheme will also be required to conduct monthly health camps, treating at least five patients free of cost. These camps must be announced in advance and involve local leaders to increase awareness.
Additionally, the state is speeding up the distribution of Ayushman Bharat health cards by involving ASHA workers, Anganwadi staff, ration shopkeepers, and citizen service centres. To support their involvement, their honorariums will be increased.
Minister Abitkar also revealed that ₹1,300 crore has already been disbursed to hospitals since March to support this initiative. “This scheme must be implemented with full transparency,” he emphasized. “Any misuse or dishonesty will not be tolerated.”
