Maharashtra State Board to Introduce NCERT Curriculum from June

Starting June, Maharashtra State Board schools will implement the NCERT curriculum for Class 1 students, aligning with the syllabus followed by CBSE schools. While there were discussions about shifting to the CBSE academic calendar, which begins in April, the state government has decided to retain its traditional June start, citing climatic conditions and long-standing educational practices.

The decision to adopt the CBSE model has sparked debate among schools, teachers, and parents, with concerns about its impact on Maharashtra’s educational identity. However, the government maintains that the shift will improve education quality and better prepare students for national-level competitive exams.

Phased Implementation Plan

The transition to the NCERT curriculum will take place in stages:

  • 2025-26: Implementation begins with Class 1.
  • 2026: Expansion to Classes 2, 3, 4, and 6.
  • 2027: Inclusion of Classes 5, 7, 9, and 11.
  • 2028: Final phase covering Classes 8, 10, and 12.

Subjects like Mathematics and Science will follow NCERT textbooks, while subjects requiring a local context, such as languages and social sciences, will be developed by the Maharashtra State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT).

Goal Behind the Change

The government aims to standardize education, enhance learning quality, and equip students for competitive exams essential for higher education and career opportunities. The NCERT curriculum is widely recognized across India, and officials believe its introduction will help students compete on a national level.
