Maharashtra to Launch E-Registration System for Tenant Verification, Eliminating Police Station Visits

Tenants in Maharashtra will soon no longer need to visit police stations for verification, thanks to a new e-registration system set to launch by the end of February. This system will connect data from 1,130 police stations across 44,000 villages, making the process faster and more convenient.

The initiative, which faced delays due to technical issues, aims to simplify tenant verification by linking the registration department’s database with police stations. Once in place, police stations will directly access e-registration data, eliminating the need for physical visits by tenants and landlords.

Currently, property owners in rural areas must provide tenant details such as names, addresses, photos, and references to local police stations along with e-registered documents. In Pune district, for example, this process is mandatory, especially in areas near industrial zones, to monitor temporary populations.

An older online verification system in Pune became unusable due to software problems, and tenant data is now shared with police manually in Excel sheets. Officials report that around 85,000–90,000 leave and licence agreements are e-registered monthly.

The updated system will include additional information, such as the tenant’s residential history from the past five years and their permanent address. This ensures thorough verification without requiring visits to police stations.

State authorities are currently mapping police stations with village data. Once launched, the new system will improve tenant monitoring while making the process easier for both landlords and tenants across Maharashtra.
