MoRTH Denies FASTag Discontinuation Rumors, Confirms Ongoing Use
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has strongly refuted rumors circulating on social media that the FASTag system will be discontinued nationwide by May 1, 2025. In an official statement, MoRTH labeled these claims as “false and misleading,” urging the public to disregard unverified information. The ministry clarified that no such decision has been made and FASTag continues to be the official toll payment system for all national highways.
The Confusion Behind the Rumors
The confusion surrounding the future of FASTag seems to have stemmed from the government’s efforts to modernize toll collection methods. Reports of trial runs for a new tolling system utilizing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology led some to believe that the existing FASTag infrastructure would soon be replaced. MoRTH clarified that this new system is still in the experimental phase, with trials only being conducted on a limited scale. Any nationwide implementation will depend on the outcome of these trials and public feedback.
What Is ANPR-Based Tolling?
The ANPR-based system uses high-resolution cameras to scan vehicle number plates, linking them to existing FASTag accounts. This allows vehicles to pass through toll booths without stopping, making the process more efficient. In the case of a failed payment, an e-notice can be issued, and the corresponding FASTag account may be temporarily blocked until the dues are paid.
Potential Advantages of ANPR-Based Tolling
If the ANPR tolling system is successfully implemented, it could bring several benefits:
- Uninterrupted Travel: Vehicles would not need to stop at toll plazas, reducing traffic congestion.
- Faster Commutes: With a smoother toll collection process, travel times could be shortened.
- Convenience: The system could offer a more efficient and hassle-free experience for drivers.
Despite these advancements, MoRTH reiterated that FASTag is still the official toll payment system in place. The public is advised to continue using FASTag and ignore any unverified reports about its discontinuation.
