Mumbai BMC collects 11,500 kg waste from Marine drive after Team India’s victory parade

After the victory parade of the T20 Cricket World Cup 2024 team on July 4, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) carried out a special overnight cleanliness drive. They commenced the drive at 11.30 pm on July 4 and completed at 8 am on July 5.
The civic body collected a whopping 11,500 kg (11.5 metric tonnes) of waste along the Marine Drive stretch.
At least 100 sanitation workers, including 25 labourers, were deployed to clean the area before the arrival of morning joggers.
The BMC said that along with a large number of wrappers of food items and water bottles, a huge quantity of shoes and chappals (slippers), among other things, were collected.
During this drive, the civic staffers loaded two vehicles — one dumper and one compactor — with over nine metric tonnes of waste. The capacity of one dumper is three metric tonnes and one compactor holds up to six metric tonnes of waste, officials added.
Additionally, they filled five small closed-body vehicles (SCBV) with odd articles like shoes, chappals and other recyclable materials, which were later unloaded at the Suraksha Garden. Each SCBV has a holding capacity of 500 kg.
As per reports, BMC’s Solid Waste Management Department collected waste that filled two large dumpers and five small jeeps. They further stated that all the solid waste collected during the cleanliness drive will be recycled instead of piling it up in a dumping ground.
