Mumbai, 11 May – Concerned citizens are set to gather at Kotwal Garden, Mumbai on Saturday, 11th May, at 4:30 pm for a peaceful demonstration organised by the Awaken India Movement (AIM). The rally aims to voice concerns over the safety of the Covishield vaccine, produced by the Serum Institute of India, and other Covid vaccines granted Emergency Use Authorization.
The AIM has cited media and social media reports claiming a total of 19,273 adult deaths and 186 child fatalities post-vaccination. These figures have sparked a nationwide debate on the safety protocols and compensation for the families affected.
Demands for Justice and Transparency:
The demonstrators have outlined four key demands:
- Compensation for the families of those who have passed away following vaccination.
- The establishment of Fast Track & Vaccine Courts to expedite legal proceedings related to vaccine injuries.
- Active Surveillance of Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) to monitor and address potential vaccine side effects.
- Accountability for officials overseeing the vaccine rollout.
AstraZeneca, a pharmaceutical giant, is undergoing a lawsuit in the United Kingdom over its vaccine’s link to Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome. It has admitted in the trial that its AZD1222 vaccine, which was produced in India by the Serum Institute, Pune, as Covishield, could cause low platelet counts and form blood clots in very rare cases. Around 175 crore Covishield doses have been administered all over India.
As the city prepares for the demonstration, the conversation around vaccine safety continues. The rally serves as a reminder of the need for transparent communication between health officials and the public. It also highlights the importance of vigilance in monitoring vaccine effects, ensuring that the pursuit of public health does not overlook individual concerns.
The aim of the Awaken India Movement is to “awaken and empower Indians with information that will better their lives and help them build a secure and resilient nation. Our efforts are to grow nationwide networks of like minded individuals, from every socio-economic, religious and cultural community, who can collectively work alongside public, private and non-governmental organisations, to devise legal and practical solutions to the challenges we face as a nation, and as Humanity.”
