Travel Time to Be Cut to 6 Hours; Satellite-Based Toll System to Be Introduced

Mumbai: The long-awaited Mumbai-Goa highway, officially designated as National Highway 66, is set to be completed by June 2025, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced recently.

Speaking at a media interaction, Gadkari confirmed that the project, which has faced years of delays due to land acquisition issues, legal challenges, and departmental coordination problems, is now progressing swiftly. “This highway will transform connectivity in the Konkan region. It will boost tourism and economic development along the route,” he said.

Once completed, the highway will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Goa from the current 10 to 12 hours to just six hours, offering major relief to commuters and boosting regional connectivity.

In addition to the improved road infrastructure, Gadkari revealed that the government is set to introduce a new toll policy aimed at making highway travel more seamless. Traditional toll booths will be phased out and replaced with a satellite-based toll collection system. This new technology will track vehicles via GPS and automatically deduct toll charges based on the distance traveled. The policy is expected to roll out within the next 15 days.

The completion of the Mumbai-Goa highway is anticipated to be a major milestone for infrastructure development in western India, benefiting regular travelers, tourists, and the local economy alike.
