The Manikpur police, after reviewing recordings from 150 CCTV cameras, arrested a serial house burglar in Vasai on Thursday. The individual was sought in connection with a minimum of 65 robberies spanning the Vasai-Virar area.

The police have recovered stolen jewellery worth Rs. 12 lakhs, a mobile phone, a motorbike and Rs. 5000 in cash. After skimming through 150 CCTV cameras and tracking the robber, the police identified the robber as Atiq Sakharkar, age 35. In custody, he confessed to six thefts that he recently committed in Vasai East. On further investigation, it was found out that he has 65 cases registered against him.

The suspect informed the police that he could forcibly open the lock of a residence or a store within 20 seconds, swiftly pilfer from the premises within a minute, and escape. Additionally, he claimed familiarity with the locations of nearly all CCTV cameras positioned in public areas and could identify those that were operational.

A team led by Crime PI Santosh Chaudhary and PSI Saleen Patil was made to look into the robbery that took place on 15th April, wherein cash and jewellery worth Rs. 20 lakhs were stolen from a house in Vasai West.

Assisted by informants and footage from approximately 150 CCTV cameras stationed in the vicinity, police authorities successfully pinpointed the culprit as Sakharkar. Subsequently, the accused was tracked down to Bhoyada Pada in Vasai East.

Sakharkar has been booked under section 443 (housebreaking) and section 447 (trespass) of the Indian Penal Code.
