Mumbai News: Relief for Mumbaikars as Water Cut Crisis Averted for Now
The Meteorological Department’s forecast of favourable rainfall this year has played a crucial role in the decision not to impose water cuts at this time.

In a significant development for the residents of Mumbai, the city’s water crisis has been temporarily averted. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has confirmed that the current water reserves are sufficient to prevent any immediate water cuts, providing relief to the citizens until at least 31st July.
Despite the daily decrease in water levels in the dams that supply the city, the MCGM has effectively managed the situation by planning to use the available water and reserved stock efficiently. In light of the current reserves, the corporation has urged Mumbaikars to continue using water judiciously.
Mumbai’s water supply is dependent on seven reservoirs, which, as of this Tuesday, hold a combined water stock of approximately 16.48%. This figure is notably lower than the stocks recorded over the past three years, with last year’s stock at 22.25% and 2022’s at 25.8%, as per the statistics from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Officials have noted that the water stock levels in April and May typically range between 20 to 25%. However, the MCGM is closely monitoring the situation and will consult with the Indian Meteorological Department before making any decisions regarding water cuts. The city, which requires a daily supply of 4,200 million litres per day (MLD), is currently receiving 3,850 MLD due to ongoing maintenance work that had previously resulted in water cuts of 15 to 30% in several areas.
The Meteorological Department’s forecast of favourable rainfall this year has played a crucial role in the decision not to impose water cuts at this time. This prediction has brought a sigh of relief to the city’s inhabitants, who have faced water scarcity challenges in the past.
The MCGM remains committed to ensuring a stable water supply for Mumbai and will continue to update the public on the status of the water reserves and any necessary measures to be taken.
