Mumbai police launched an investigation on Monday after two vehicles with identical license plates were found parked near the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, as reported by the news agency PTI.

According to the Colaba Police, the original owner of an Ertiga bearing the license plate number MH01 EE 2388 is Sakir Ali, a resident of Nariman Point.

While near the Gateway of India on Monday, Sakir Ali spotted another Ertiga of the same make and model displaying the exact same license plate. Concerned, he alerted the nearby Regional Transport Office (RTO).

“Sakir Ali resides in Nariman Point and owns an Ertiga with the license plate MH01 EE 2388. He noticed another car of the same model with an identical number plate near the Gateway of India. He informed the RTO, and both cars were taken to the Colaba Police Station. During the investigation, it was discovered that Prasad Kadam, a resident of Seawoods, Navi Mumbai, had deliberately altered his car’s number plate. Kadam had taken a car loan from Chola Mandlam but was unable to repay it. The investigation is ongoing,” stated Colaba Police in a post shared on X by ANI. The police have recorded statements from both drivers and will determine further action based on the findings.

Given the history of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel as a target of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, any unusual activity in its vicinity naturally raises concerns. The terrorist attacks on November 26, 2008, resulted in significant loss of life and damage to property, with over 160 people killed. Situated in Colaba, South Mumbai, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel remains a landmark of luxury and a reminder of the city’s resilience.
