Mumbai records 34% rise in road accidents in 2023
Experts have mentioned the need for stricter enforcement of rules and better facilities to prevent fatalities.

According to the latest report revealed by the Maharashtra Economic Survey, there is a significant spike in injuries due to road accidents reported both in Mumbai and across the state.
Mumbai records 34 per cent increase in road crashes and a 4 per cent rise in the number of fatalities in 2023 compared to 2022. Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported a 6 per cent rise in road crashes and a 1 percent increase in deaths during the same period.
Road accidents in Mumbai:
Mumbai reported 2,533 road crashes and 384 fatalities in 2023. In 2022, the city saw 1,895 accidents and 371 deaths.
As per sources, between January and May 2024, a total of 1,075 road crashes were reported in Mumbai, which led to over 1,100 sustained injuries. Of these, 130 were fatal crashes resulting in 139 deaths.
This data was released when the death of two young men came to light on Tuesday, July 2, after they fell 20 feet from a flyover in Goregaon. The accident took place when the two were commuting from Goregaon East to West using the connector flyover on the bike at around 4:15 am.
Details of accidents in Maharashtra:
In 2023, Maharashtra recorded 35,243 road crashes and 15,336 deaths last year. 33,383 accidents and 15,224 fatalities in 2022.
Experts stated that speeding is the key reason for road crashes, which happen at night, across Maharashtra.

Experts have mentioned the need for stricter enforcement of rules and better facilities to prevent fatalities. This includes wider footpaths, proper pedestrian crossings, cameras installed at road junctions to check the speed of vehicles, reduced speed limit in crash-prone zones and bike lanes are also mandatory to ensure the safety of all road users.
