Mumbai to Get Faster, Smoother Connectivity with New High-Speed Highway
The government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the construction of a 6-lane high-speed highway from JNPA Port (Pagote) to Chowk in Maharashtra. This 29.2 km long highway will be built under the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) model at a cost of ₹4,500.62 crore.
This project is a key part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, aimed at improving connectivity to major ports and infrastructure hubs. With increasing container traffic at JNPA Port and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, the need for better road connectivity in Mumbai has become urgent.
Why This Project Matters for Mumbai
- Faster Travel: Currently, vehicles take 2-3 hours to move from JNPA Port to NH-48 and Mumbai-Pune Expressway due to heavy congestion in areas like Palaspe Phata, Kalamboli, and Panvel. This new highway will reduce travel time significantly.
- Direct Connectivity: The highway will link Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Mumbai-Goa Highway (NH-66), and NH-48, easing traffic flow in and around Mumbai.
- Smoother Truck Movement: Two tunnels through the Sahyadri hills will eliminate the need for large trucks to navigate steep ghat sections, ensuring faster and safer freight transport.
- Boost to Mumbai’s Economy: This modern highway will enhance Mumbai’s trade, logistics, and infrastructure development, supporting industries and creating new economic opportunities.
With the Navi Mumbai International Airport set to open in 2025, this project will play a crucial role in reducing congestion and improving transport efficiency for Mumbai’s growing needs.
