Mumbai to Witness Its Longest Intra-City Underground Road
Following the inauguration of India’s first undersea tunnel, the Coastal Road tunnel, Mumbai is set to embrace its longest intra-city underground road.
The Coastal Road tunnel, a groundbreaking achievement utilizing a 12-metre diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) imported from China, faced construction records and setbacks due to pandemic-induced delays.
Currently disassembled, the TBM awaits its next task: constructing a tunnel linking Orange Gate on the Freeway to the Marine Drive end of the Coastal Road. Stretching over 9 kilometers, this upcoming tunnel is poised to become the longest road within a city in the country.
Much like its predecessor, the Coastal Road tunnel, it will adopt a twin-tube construction model featuring viaducts and incorporating modern safety measures. This ambitious project marks another milestone in Mumbai’s infrastructural development, enhancing connectivity within the bustling city.
