Mumbaicha Dabbawala: Mira Road gets uniquely designed bus shelter
As a part of a unique initiative, a bus shelter in Mira Road has been designed to pay tribute to the city’s iconic and hardworking dabbawalas.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) have come up with a plan to makeover these uniquely shaped bus stands at 100 locations in Mira Road, Kashimira, Bhayandar and Thane areas.
From fruits like apples and oranges to instruments like radio, auto-rickshaws, and coaches of buses, trains, and metro- the traditionally designed bus shelters in the twin-city are being transformed into various shapes.

Located near the Dahisar Toll Plaza in Mira Road, this bus stop named- Mumbai-Cha-Dabbawala has become the most popular one. it has become a centre of attraction for commuters and citizens.
Two finely sculptured dabbawalla, who are decked up in white outfits and traditional Gandhi cap, are seen carrying a large tray of steel tiffin boxes which act as a shelter of the bus stop equipped with user-friendly railings, resting supports, and comfortable sitting arrangements.

The bus shelter project, which is executed by the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) and their Thane counterparts on virtue of funds made available by Shiv Sena legislator- Pratap Sarnaik from his local area development (LAD) funds, costs around Rs 10 crores.
Since 1980, more than 5000 dabbawalas have been delivering home-cooked meals to two lakh office-goers on a daily basis. Inspired by their incredible teamwork, this special bus stop has been built to honor them.
