Seasonal pink blooms turn a busy Mumbai highway into a visual delight

Mumbai is known for its fast-paced life and concrete surroundings, but for a short period every year, parts of the city turn visibly pink. Similar to Japan’s famous cherry blossom season, Mumbai witnesses its own floral display when trees along the Eastern Express Highway bloom with soft pink flowers.

Although Mumbai’s climate does not support cherry blossom trees, a different flowering species has adapted well to the city’s environment. This seasonal bloom is most visible along the Vikhroli–Ghatkopar stretch of the Eastern Express Highway.

Pink Trumpet Trees Transform Highway Stretch

The trees responsible for this sight are Tabebuia Heterophylla, commonly called Pink Trumpet Trees. These trees are often mistaken for cherry blossoms due to their light pink flowers but belong to a different species. They require very little water, are easy to maintain, and grow well in urban conditions.

During the blooming season, the trees are covered in pink flowers, with fallen petals creating a carpet-like effect on the ground. The view offers a rare and calm visual break on one of Mumbai’s busiest roads.

Where the Bloom Can Be Seen

Every year, the Eastern Express Highway between Ghatkopar and Vikhroli, near the Godrej area, turns into a pink corridor. The location recently gained wider attention after a video shared on Instagram went viral, leading more people to visit the area to see the flowers and take photographs.

Social Media Reactions and Concerns

The pink bloom has received positive reactions on social media, with many users praising the beauty of the area. Several people shared photos and videos, while others said the bloom gives Mumbai a brief moment of calm amid its busy routine.

However, some concerns have also been raised. Locals and regular walkers have complained about overcrowding, people plucking flowers, breaking branches, and blocking footpaths for photos and social media reels. Joggers, especially on weekends, have reported inconvenience due to increased crowding.
