Mumbai’s tunnel project gains momentum with nod for launch shaft construction
In a significant development for the Orange Gate-Marine Drive tunnel project in Mumbai, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has secured a crucial no objection certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) for the construction of a launch shaft near P D’Mello Road.
The allocated land, comprising 0.71 hectares of permanent area and 1.25 hectares of temporary area, totalling 1.96 hectares, will serve as the site for the launch shaft. MMRDA plans to promptly transfer this land to the designated contractor to commence tunnelling operations.
A launch shaft plays a pivotal role in tunnel construction, serving as the starting point for tunnel boring machines (TBMs) or other equipment. It provides the necessary space for assembly, testing, and launching of the TBM into the ground, facilitating the excavation process and material removal through cranes or conveyor systems.
The proposed tunnel holds immense promise for Mumbai’s transportation infrastructure, offering the shortest route between the city’s western and eastern regions. With a projected cost of Rs 7,765 crore, the ambitious project spans 9.2 kilometres, encompassing 6.52 kilometres of twin tunnels.
Each tunnel, 11 meters wide, will accommodate two traffic lanes, supplemented by a dedicated emergency lane for unforeseen contingencies. Additionally, cross passages will be incorporated between the twin tunnels to ensure safe and efficient travel.
This milestone underscores the MMRDA’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and easing traffic congestion in Mumbai. As the project progresses, the tunnel promises to emerge as a vital artery in the city’s transportation network, facilitating smoother and more efficient intra-city travel for residents and commuters alike.
