Mumbai is preparing to launch its first underground metro line in July 2024, marking a significant milestone in the city’s transportation network. This new metro line spans 33.5 kilometres beneath the bustling city streets, aiming to drastically reduce traffic congestion. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has invested over Rs 37,000 crores in this ambitious project, underscoring its commitment to alleviating Mumbai’s chronic traffic woes.

The underground metro, starting from Aarey Colony, will cover 27 stations across its stretch. This includes key locations such as Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk, CST Metro, Kalbadevi, Girgaon, Grant Road, Mumbai Central Metro, Mahalaxmi, Science Museum, Acharya Atre Chowk, Worli, Siddhivinayak, Dadar, Sitaladevi, Dharavi, BKC, Vidyanagari, Santacruz, Domestic Airport, Sahar Road, International Airport, Marol Naka, MIDC, SEEPZ, and Aarey Depot. Notably, 26 of these stations will be underground.

The metro services are scheduled to run from 6:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., with trains available every few minutes. These trains can reach speeds of up to 90 km per hour, significantly reducing commute times. For example, a 35-kilometer journey that would typically take over two hours by car will be completed in just 50 minutes by metro.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been awarded a 10-year contract for the operation and maintenance of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro’s Line 3. This contract includes managing the operation control centre, depot control centre, and stations, running trains, maintaining train systems, and ensuring passenger safety.

The metro will operate 260 services daily, providing frequent and efficient transport options for commuters. The first phase of the project will begin in July, with the second phase expected to start in the coming months, further enhancing Mumbai’s transit system.
