Nana Patekar Opens Up About His Personal Life, Bond with Wife Neelkanti, and Their Unique Family Dynamic

MUMBAI: Known for his commanding on-screen performances, veteran actor Nana Patekar recently shared rare insights into his personal life, revealing the deep bond and quiet sacrifices that have defined his relationship with wife Neelkanti Patekar.

In an emotional interview with The Lallantop, Nana revisited the early days of their relationship, which began during their theatre careers. “She was a bank officer who also performed in plays. I used to earn Rs. 50 per show, while she had a stable monthly salary of Rs. 2,500,” he said. “She told me, ‘You focus on your work, I’ll take care of us.’” Patekar credited her unwavering support as a cornerstone of his success during the challenging early years of his acting journey.

The couple tied the knot in a modest ceremony, spending just Rs. 750 on their wedding and choosing Pune for their honeymoon. Over time, however, they decided to live separately—a choice driven not by conflict, but by practicality and mutual understanding. While Neelkanti stayed with their son Malhar and Nana’s mother, Nana chose to live alone. “This setup worked for us,” he explained, emphasizing that emotional support between them remained intact.

Neelkanti, a former actress who once won a state award for her work, stepped away from the limelight to focus on her family. She recently returned to the screen with a role in Chhava, marking a rare but welcome appearance that highlighted her enduring talent.

Their son, Malhar Patekar, has also embraced a creative path—engaging in both filmmaking and social work. He plays an active role in the Naam Foundation, which Nana co-founded to support drought-affected farmers.
