Narayana Murthy Reaffirms Support for 70-Hour Workweek, Rejects Work-Life Balance
Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy has once again sparked debate by sharing his strong opinions on work ethics in India. Speaking at the CNBC-TV18 Global Leadership Summit, he reiterated his belief in the importance of hard work and commitment for India’s progress, saying he does not support the idea of “work-life balance.”
Murthy criticized India’s decision to shift from a six-day to a five-day workweek in 1986, calling it a mistake. He argued that Indians should aim to work 70 hours a week to help the country grow and address the challenges of being a developing nation.
A Call for Hard Work
Murthy recalled an incident from 25 years ago when KV Kamath, now chairman of Jio Financial Services, was asked about work-life balance. Kamath had responded that India should prioritize survival over balancing work and personal life. Murthy echoed this sentiment, stating that the country needs a stronger work ethic to succeed.
Murthy also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his dedication, estimating that Modi works around 100 hours a week. He urged citizens to match this level of commitment, emphasizing that hard work is essential for India’s economic development.
A Message to India
Murthy concluded by saying that India’s progress depends on the willingness of its people to make sacrifices. He highlighted that those who have benefited from public education have a duty to work hard and contribute to the country’s growth. “I will take this belief with me to my grave,” he said, reaffirming his stance on the 70-hour workweek.
