9.6-km corridor along Panvel Creek aims to cut travel time and boost city infrastructure by 2028

Navi Mumbai is set to see a major improvement in its road network with the upcoming Kharghar Coastal Road (KCR), a project designed to ease traffic and support the city’s rapid growth. The new corridor will play an important role in improving access to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The 9.678-kilometre road will run along Panvel Creek, directly connecting Kharghar, CBD Belapur, and Nerul. With an estimated cost of ₹1,020.70 crore, the project aims to make travel within the city quicker and more efficient.

The road will be built in two phases. The first phase will link Kharghar to CBD Belapur, while the second phase will extend the route further to the Nerul Water Transport Jetty. The alignment will begin at Jalmarg in Sector 16, Kharghar, pass near the PAY Housing Scheme and Kharghar railway station, move through CBD Belapur, and end near Delhi Public School in Nerul.

To protect the environment, planners have slightly adjusted parts of the route to reduce its impact on mangroves and the surrounding creek.

Once completed, the coastal road will connect key routes like the Sion–Panvel Expressway and Palm Beach Road, improving connectivity between residential and commercial areas. It is also expected to support future developments such as housing projects and business hubs, including the International Corporate Park in Kharghar.

A major benefit for commuters will be reduced travel time. Journeys between Kharghar, CBD Belapur, and Nerul could drop from around 45 minutes to just 10 minutes.

The project is being carried out by J Kumar and is expected to be completed by 2028. Initial work has already begun, with CIDCO starting the process of relocating electrical utilities along the planned route.
