NHAI Confirms No Changes to FASTag Rules, Dismisses Rumors

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has clarified that recent reports about FASTag transaction failures due to inactivity before or after toll payments are false. They confirmed that a recent circular from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) does not impact FASTag users.

Why Was the Circular Issued?

NHAI explained that the circular is meant to resolve disputes between banks that handle FASTag payments, ensuring smoother transactions between Acquirer Banks and Issuer Banks. It also aims to make sure FASTag payments happen quickly, reducing delays for users.

FASTag Works as Usual

  • All National Highway toll plazas use the ICD 2.5 protocol, which provides real-time updates on FASTag status. This means users can recharge their FASTag anytime before reaching the toll plaza without any issues.
  • Some State Highway toll plazas still use the older ICD 2.4 protocol, which requires frequent updates on tag status. However, these tolls will soon be upgraded to the ICD 2.5 system.

How to Avoid Payment Issues

To ensure smooth transactions, NHAI advises users to:
Link their FASTag wallet to UPI or set up auto-recharge with their bank.
Manually recharge FASTag through UPI, net banking, or other methods before reaching the toll plaza.

No New Restrictions for FASTag Users

NHAI reassured users that there are no new rules affecting FASTag usage. Users can continue using FASTag as usual without any interruptions.
