NMC issues warning to medical colleges on compelling PG students for hostel stay

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a warning to medical colleges, cautioning them against compelling post-graduate (PG) students to stay in provided hostels and charging exorbitant fees.
The directive, referring to the Post Graduate Medical Education Regulation (PGMER), 2023, emphasizes that while it is mandatory for colleges to offer residential accommodation to PG students, staying in the hostel is not compulsory.
Several complaints were received by the NMC from PG students, reporting that medical colleges were enforcing hostel residency and imposing substantial charges.
The commission’s public notice, issued on February 8, calls on all medical colleges and institutions to adhere to the regulations.
Failure to comply may result in actions such as monetary penalties, reduction of seats, and even the suspension of admissions, in accordance with regulations 9.1 and 9.2 of the PGMER, 2023.
