Northwest India to Experience More Heatwave Days This Summer: IMD
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a hotter-than-usual summer for Northwest India, with heatwave days expected to nearly double. Normally, the region experiences five to six heatwave days per season, but this year, it could face 10-12, according to IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy.
Rising Temperatures and Heatwave Criteria
A heatwave is officially declared when the maximum temperature in plains reaches 40°C or is at least 5°C higher than normal. While the IMD has not confirmed if 2025 will surpass 2024—India’s hottest year with 554 heatwave days—temperatures are expected to rise significantly.
Weather Changes and Wind Relief
Despite the heatwave warning, parts of North India may see a temporary dip in temperatures due to north-westerly winds from Rajasthan. These winds, blowing at speeds of 20-30 km/h, are expected to sweep through Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan over the next three days, making the weather dry and dusty.
Seasonal Forecast for India
According to the IMD’s seasonal outlook for March to May 2025, most of India will experience above-normal temperatures. However, some southernmost parts of Peninsular India and isolated areas in the Northeast may see near-normal or slightly below-normal temperatures.
Precautionary Measures Expected
With the rise in heatwave days, authorities are likely to issue advisories to help people stay safe. The IMD will continue providing localized weather updates to ensure preparedness for extreme summer conditions.
