At 74, Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to inspire people with his energy and discipline. In a recent conversation with US-based podcaster and AI researcher Lex Fridman, he spoke about his fasting habits, which he has followed for over 50 years.

Modi practices Chaturmas fasting, a four-month-long tradition that starts in mid-June and ends after Diwali. During this time, he eats only one meal a day. He explained that this helps digestion, especially during the monsoon season when it naturally slows down.

He also follows Navratri fasting twice a year. In October, for nine days, he eats nothing and drinks only hot water. In March or April (Chaitra Navratri), he eats just one type of fruit once a day. “If I choose papaya, then for all nine days, I eat only papaya,” he shared.

Modi believes fasting sharpens the senses like smell, touch, and taste. For him, fasting is not a weakness but a form of self-discipline and devotion. Instead of slowing him down, he feels it recharges his mind and body, strengthens willpower, and brings inner balance.
