Vatican City, April 21, 2025 – Pope Francis, the 266th Bishop of Rome and the first Latin American to lead the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed his death at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, following complications from double pneumonia.

Pope Francis had been facing health challenges in recent years, with his condition deteriorating after he was admitted to Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on February 14 due to bronchitis. He was later diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia on February 18. After spending 38 days in the hospital, he returned to the Vatican to continue his recovery, but his health ultimately declined.

The Pope had a history of respiratory problems, stemming from a lung surgery he underwent in his twenties in his home country of Argentina. More recently, in 2023, he had to cancel a planned trip to the United Arab Emirates due to lung inflammation.

Despite ongoing health struggles, Pope Francis remained a dynamic and influential figure in the Church. His papacy was marked by profound compassion, simplicity, and a steadfast commitment to serving the marginalized. A strong advocate for interfaith dialogue, environmental protection, and the rights of migrants, he ushered in a new era of outreach and reform within the Vatican.

Pope Francis made significant strides in addressing the Church’s most critical issues, including financial transparency and the fight against clerical abuse. His 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si’, catalyzed global discussions on ecological responsibility and climate justice.

In April 2024, he approved revisions to the papal funeral rites, emphasizing humility in death as he had lived. Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, remarked, “The funeral of the Roman Pontiff is that of a pastor and disciple of Christ, not of a powerful person of this world.”

At 7:35 AM today, Cardinal Kevin Farrell delivered a solemn message:
β€œAt 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.”

As the Vatican flags are lowered in mourning, the world begins to bid farewell to Pope Francis, whose legacy will undoubtedly resonate for generations. His impact will be remembered not for grandeur, but for his grace and unwavering devotion to faith and service.
