Rohit Sharma to Lead India in England Test Series Despite Recent Struggles
After India’s victory in the Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma is set to continue as the Test captain for the upcoming five-match series against England, starting June 20 at Headingley. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selection panel have decided to back him for another important overseas tour.
There were doubts about Rohit’s Test future after a poor home season and a tough tour of Australia, where he chose to step down from the final Test in Sydney. However, India’s recent win in Dubai has strengthened the selectors’ faith in his leadership. A source from the selection panel said, “He has proved himself as a leader, and everyone agrees he is the right choice for England. Rohit is also keen to continue playing Test cricket.”
After India’s Champions Trophy final win against New Zealand, Rohit dismissed any immediate retirement plans but remained unsure about his long-term future. When asked if he would play in the 2027 ODI World Cup, he said, “Right now, I’m playing well and enjoying my time with the team. I haven’t decided about 2027 yet, but I’m keeping my options open.”
Rohit struggled in Australia, scoring just 10 runs in three Tests, and his last Test half-century was in October 2024 against New Zealand. However, he remains hopeful about his batting form. In January, after stepping down from the Sydney Test, he said, “Runs can come back anytime. I believe in myself, and things can change quickly.”
As India prepares for another tough overseas series, all eyes will be on Rohit to lead the team in England and regain his Test form.
