Sabyasachi Mukherjee: 25 Years of Fashion, Resilience, and Global Success
Renowned fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee is celebrating 25 years in the industry, marking his journey from financial struggles to becoming a global icon in luxury fashion. His brand, now valued at ₹500 crore, is a symbol of creativity, craftsmanship, and determination.
From a Humble Beginning to a Fashion Empire
Born in Kolkata in 1974, Sabyasachi grew up in a middle-class family facing financial difficulties. His father, a refugee from Bangladesh, struggled to find stable work after the decline of the jute industry. Despite academic struggles, Sabyasachi’s love for art and culture led him toward fashion.
His journey wasn’t easy—he faced self-doubt, financial troubles, and even depression, which once led to a suicide attempt. However, this dark phase helped him find clarity and purpose. Reflecting on this, he once said, “Depression gave me clarity. If you’re not depressed, you’re not normal.”
Creating a Unique Fashion Identity
In the 1990s, Sabyasachi entered the fashion world with a distinctive style—blending traditional Indian textiles with modern influences. His designs, rich in heritage and intricate embroidery, quickly gained attention. In 1999, he opened his first studio in Kolkata, and his bridal collections soon became a favorite among India’s elite.
Bollywood played a key role in his rise, with stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Priyanka Chopra, and Deepika Padukone wearing his creations. Unlike many designers, Sabyasachi never compromised on quality or authenticity for mass production.
Expanding the Business
In 2021, he took a big step by selling a 51% stake in his brand to Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail Limited (ABFRL) for ₹398 crore. This deal helped him expand while keeping his creative freedom. By 2020, his brand’s revenue was ₹275 crore, with an aim to reach ₹500 crore by 2025.
His business is not just about clothing—his jewelry line now earns ₹150-175 crore annually, and his handbags bring in ₹60 crore. He aims to grow his brand to a $2 billion (₹17,000 crore) valuation by 2030.
Making a Mark on the Global Stage
Sabyasachi has taken Indian fashion to the world, especially in the United States. In 2023, he opened a flagship store in New York City, bringing his luxurious designs to an international audience.
Celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, and Mindy Kaling have all worn his creations, increasing his brand’s global appeal.
Celebrity Praise and Industry Recognition
Fashion leaders admire Sabyasachi’s work. Christian Louboutin, his collaborator, called their partnership “a reflection of our shared artistic vision.” Bollywood star Alia Bhatt praised him on his 25th anniversary, saying, “Your work is more than fashion—it’s art that blends tradition and innovation.”
A Legacy of Strength and Vision
Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s journey is a story of resilience—turning struggles into opportunities and building an internationally recognized brand. From financial hardships and mental health battles to becoming one of the biggest names in luxury fashion, he has redefined Indian couture. As he celebrates 25 years, his legacy continues to inspire, and his vision remains set on even greater success in the future.
