Sabyasachi Mukherjee, a well-known Indian designer famous for his luxurious bridal outfits, is noticing a big change in the wedding fashion industry. For years, Indian weddings have been grand and extravagant, with brides wearing heavily embellished outfits that could weigh over 17 pounds and cost more than $6,800. However, modern brides are now preferring a simpler, more timeless look. This reflects a shift in Indian weddings, where personal style and elegance are replacing over-the-top celebrations.

In an interview at his Mumbai store, Mukherjee stated, “The wedding industry in India as we know it today is breathing its last.” He believes this shift is due to India’s fast-growing economy and an increasing number of wealthy individuals. As India becomes one of the world’s biggest luxury markets, consumer preferences are evolving.

India’s Growing Luxury Market

India’s luxury market is expanding rapidly. A report from McKinsey & Co. predicts that by 2028, the number of ultra-wealthy individuals with a net worth over $30 million will increase by 50%. Additionally, the number of aspirational luxury buyers is expected to reach 100 million by 2027. This presents a huge opportunity for high-end brands, including Sabyasachi’s. While demand for extravagant bridal outfits may be declining, his brand is seeing strong sales in simpler, more affordable saris. However, competition in the market is intense, making success a challenge. Mukherjee expects his company to generate about $60 million in revenue this year.

Expanding the Sabyasachi Brand

Rather than focusing on international expansion immediately, Mukherjee is concentrating on growing his brand within India. He is opening more stores and introducing new product lines. One of his key areas of growth is jewelry, which already contributes significantly to his revenue. In fact, he expects jewelry sales to soon surpass apparel sales. To attract more customers, he is introducing smaller, more affordable jewelry pieces.

In addition to jewelry, Mukherjee plans to launch perfume and beauty products next year. He is also looking to expand his wallpaper and furnishings collection into full-scale home and hotel design services.

Sabyasachi: More Than Just Fashion

Mukherjee envisions his brand as more than just fashion—it’s a lifestyle. He is open to collaborations and has previously partnered with brands like H&M, Starbucks, and Bergdorf Goodman. India’s premium fashion market is growing, attracting big investors. Business tycoons like Mukesh Ambani and Kumar Mangalam Birla have invested in Indian designers, including a majority stake in Sabyasachi’s brand, acquired by Birla’s company in 2021.

With India set to become one of the world’s biggest luxury markets, Mukherjee is determined to build a global luxury brand from India. “Soon, India will be the biggest, and I want to ride that wave,” he said.
